Case Study 17

Transforming elder care with the Internet of Things

Nokia is a leading global provider of mobile and fixed connectivity, which empowers customers to develop, enable, integrate, and implement network infrastructure, business models, and services with robust and reliable high-speed networks, broadband, and machine-to-machine services.

Nokia was keen to identify opportunities where it could extend its IoT portfolio with value-adding solutions, analytics, and optimized networks, and commissioned Eden to develop use cases for IoT in Singapore which would leverage Nokia’s unique selling proposition to better users’ lifestyles, contribute to a deep social need, and achieve sustained business growth.

Eden conducted a comprehensive analysis of statistical indicators, technology trends, the competitive landscape, growth projections, and system inefficiencies across industries to identify the global connected healthcare market as favorable for disruption. We then drilled into Singapore’s healthcare economics, social policies, ecosystem stakeholders, budgets, and population demographics to provide Nokia with a baseline understanding of system issues and determine a focus in the eldercare space.

We envisioned a world where IoT would enable elders to age meaningfully, actively, and independently. Using in-depth interviews, ethnographic observations at elder facilities, and iterative co-creation with technology experts as well as clinicians, we surfaced, evaluated, and prioritized potential IoT projects for Nokia which spoke to this vision as well as Nokia’s unique strengths, its IoT development roadmap, and value at stake.

Eden used a user-centric approach to detail practical problem statements for specific user archetypes, developing solutions that are inclusive, comprehensive, compelling to elders, and aligned with to their instinctive behaviors and habits. We collaborated closely with Nokia, care providers, and potential customers, to design, prototype, iterate, refine, and validate user features, specify user requirements, evidence the technology feasibility, establish test protocols, and align stakeholders on a phased implementation process.

Client testimonial

“Eden delivered a well of knowledge of an industry vertical that was new to Nokia, and helped us develop compelling solutions that resonated deeply with healthcare providers. What we gained was not only the know-how to enter the digital health space in Singapore, but where Eden stood out was to take the role of our market development adviser along this engagement – bringing in industry partners to co-develop our solutions, establishing a host to trial our products, and jointly developing new enterprise customers. Eden’s consultants also went out of their way to run the Innovation Labs World event. Eden’s counsel gave us confidence in entering the Smart Health market and we are well on our way to transforming the state of elder care here and across the region and also introducing other IoT initiatives.”
